I opened all six reports on its lab page:

• Potency. PharmLabs San Diego, January 2025. Mitragynine 1.88%, 7-OH not detected. No product, lot or customer named. Jack calls 1.88% its “current batch” across 40-plus strains, so I read it as one composite sample.
• Microbes and heavy metals. Analytical Resource Laboratories, May 2025. Microbes: none detected. Metals: arsenic 0.494 ppm, lead 0.516, cadmium 0.027, mercury 0.029, with the limit column reading “Record Only”. No lot or customer named.
• Shot, gummies, kava shot. Dated May 2025 and August to September 2024. These name Jack as the customer. The powder reports don’t.

No report carries a lot number, none is newer than June 2025, and there is no pesticide report, though the page says it tests for pesticides. By check 1, Jack hasn’t passed yet. Email support@jackbotanicals.com the lot code on your bag and ask for the matching COA.

Refunds run 30 days, opened product included, if 75% is left, and you pay return shipping. Ships fast. Its separate refund page has a placeholder return address, so get the terms in writing. Its no-ship list omits Louisiana and Tennessee, which the legal table below shows as banned. Its 5.0-star reviews are all on its own store, and I found no independent review. 2. Kraken Kratom: powder, capsules and crushed leaf

AKA listed so “who knows what is in the bags you buy as it is not regulated or FDA approved, doesn’t apply here. Kraken advertises free 2 to 3 day shipping on every order. Great customer service. A long track records. Highly trusted source.

It also sells capsules and crushed leaf. Refunds and exchanges need a request within 30 days of delivery, and you pay return shipping. Its “Extract & Enhanced” category is outside this review.

3. New Dawn Kratom: longest refund window

AKA listed. The 45-day refund is the longest on this list. On 6 October 2026 the 4-way split kilo was $99.99 for four 250 g bags of different strains, about $0.10 a gram before shipping, so you can compare strains before you commit to a full kilo of one. The sample pack (3 x 250 g) is $79.99. Free shipping over $100. Narrower strain list than Kraken, and no extracts.

4. ETHA Natural Botanicals: traceability, not on the AKA list

Not on the AKA list. ETHA says it follows its own GMP standards. Per its homepage, a QR code on each product links to its lab results. That is the most traceable setup of the two non-AKA vendors here, but I haven’t opened those reports. The refund window is 30 days. Its store shows 4.7/5 from 1,496 reviews, all on its own site, so give them less weight than outside reviews. They have some of the best customer service experience I had.

ETHA also sells concentrated products, which this page doesn’t review. If AKA status is your hard line, choose an AKA-listed vendor from this list.

5. Kona Kratom: same-day shipping before 4 p.m. PT (its statement)

AKA listed. Weekday orders before 4 p.m. PT ship that day. Kona says it grinds the leaf just before packaging. It lists 20+ strains, each as powder or capsules. The 30-day refund covers opened product too, which not every vendor offers. The homepage doesn’t list the full test panel, so ask for the batch COA.

6. Left Coast Kratom: cheap samples

AKA listed. On 6 October 2026 powder samples started at $2.95, so trying a vendor cost a few dollars. Shipping is free from $49. Weekday orders before 2 p.m. PT ship the same day.

Its testing page lists arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, plus salmonella, E. coli, yeast and mold. Left Coast says it uses two or more labs, sells only what passes, and puts a lot number on every label. Those are the vendor’s statements. The lot-number check is the one in the COA section below.

The catch is the refund. You get 30 days, but only on sealed bags, and you pay return shipping. Opened kratom isn’t refunded, so use samples before you buy a kilo. On 6 October 2026 kilos ran $149.99 on sale, about $0.15 a gram, and capsules started at $12.99.

7. Kratom Spot: bundles and regional choice

AKA listed. 30-day refund, free shipping over $100. Red, green and white strains from Bali, Maeng Da, Thai, Malay and Sumatra, as powder or capsules, plus bundles. On 6 October 2026 products ran from $9.99 to $159.99, depending on size and strain.

AKA listed (as “The Golden Monk”). If you’re unhappy, Golden Monk offers a replacement or a refund. Weekday orders before 2 p.m. MT ship the same day. It sells powder, capsules and split kilos. Kratom brand comparison: what should you look for?

Five checks, in order of importance. I haven’t put numeric weights on them, because nothing on this page is scored. The order is the method.

How to compare kratom products online: the 5 checks

1. A real COA. A COA is a certificate of analysis, the lab report for one batch. Open it for one product. No report, no order. The lot number on it must match the lot number on your bag.
2. The AKA directory. Search the vendor on the AKA GMP Qualified Vendors list. A badge on the vendor’s own site doesn’t count. The AKA is an industry advocacy group, and its GMP program is an audit run under its own standards. A 2023 paper rated 42 vendor sites on that list at 32.7 out of 75 on DISCERN, a standard tool for scoring consumer health information. The audit covers how a company makes products, not which products it sells, so some AKA brands also sell extracts.
3. Reviews off the vendor’s site. Look for buyer reviews on third-party platforms and in long-running forum threads. Be wary of any “best rated kratom” claim that rests on stars the vendor collects itself.
4. The refund policy. 30 to 45 days is normal here. Check whether opened product is covered.
5. Price per gram. Compare kilo prices, with shipping.

I mark AKA status only because it is the one check I could record from public pages. By check 1, every vendor here, Kona included, is not yet passed, because I haven’t matched a lot to a lab report for any of them.

If a vendor fails check 1, I walk away. If it fails only check 2, a small first order can still make sense when the lab reports hold up. ETHA and Kratora fail check 2. Each is there for one thing it says about itself: a QR code to lab results (ETHA) and 13+ years of trading (Kratora). Both are the vendors’ own statements.

6 red flags to check before you buy

• No batch COA, or the wrong lot number.
• Health claims like “treats pain” or “helps anxiety”. Those are the claim types the FDA and FTC have written to sellers about.
• A price far below everyone else’s and no test data.
• “Enhanced” or 7-OH products sold as if they were ordinary kratom.
• Shipping to states where kratom is banned.
• Only perfect reviews, all on the vendor’s own site.

How to read a kratom lab report (COA) in 60 seconds

The lot code is the string of letters and numbers near the seal on your bag. Open the vendor’s COA and look for the same code. If it isn’t there, the report describes some other bag.

Then check five lines.

1. Lot number. It must match your package.
2. Lab and date. A named, independent (3rd-party) lab, and a recent date. I look for the last 6 to 12 months.
3. Mitragynine. In one 2019 analysis that included extracts and alkaloid-rich fractions, mitragynine ranged from 0.7% to 38.7% by weight (Sharma 2019). Among commercial products in a 2020 study it varied about fourfold, and the authors noted that labels don’t reflect the variation (Todd 2020). Read the batch number, not the brand.
4. 7-OH. Plain leaf has only a small share: 7-OH is under 2% of leaf alkaloids (FDA, in Sources). A high 7-OH figure points to a concentrated product, though the DEA hasn’t said how botanical powders will fare under its proposed ratio test.
5. Heavy metals and microbes. Lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, salmonella, E. coli, yeast and mold, each with units. A report that lists only alkaloids is incomplete.

A COA covers one batch and one lab. It doesn’t show a product is free of contaminants, and buyers say reports can be faked or not batch-specific. If a vendor can’t send one when you ask, you have your answer.

These are brands readers search for. I haven’t tested or ranked them. The table records one fact: whether the name appeared on the AKA GMP Qualified Vendors list on 6 October 2026. The list has no last-updated date, so re-check it before you buy.

Happy Go Leafy and Super Speciosa are among the names that recur on 2026 “best kratom brands” lists. Neither was on the AKA list on 6 October 2026. Happy Hippo Herbals, Kingdom Kratom, Oasis Kratom and Jacks Botanicals were. Not listed doesn’t mean bad. It means the AKA program hasn’t audited how the product is made, so you rely on the vendor’s own lab reports. Listed doesn’t mean good, for the same reason. That is why the checks above matter more than any list of kratom brands, mine included.

Is there a “safest” kratom brand?

No. “Safe” isn’t something a brand can earn on this evidence. Dependence, interactions with medicines and contamination risk all depend on the product and on you. What you can check is narrower: a lot-matched COA with heavy metals and microbes listed, plain leaf as the only ingredient, and a state where the product is legal.

I can’t give you a reliable list. Store stock changes by region and by week, and none of the sources I used documents it. What I can say is that you can’t check a lot code against a lab report from a shelf unless the package prints a web address or QR code that leads to one. 5. Freshness, which a report can’t show. Buyers use smell, bitterness and color as stand-ins for lab reports. They are proxies, not tests.

Is kratom addictive? What the numbers show and what nobody knows yet

Dependence comes before the strain talk because it changes how you read everything after it. No controlled trial is included in the studies reviewed here. If you’re asking this about yourself, you’re asking the right question.

• Survey, PRELIMINARY (non-probability sample). In 2023, 25.5% of 2,061 current consumers met DSM-5 criteria for kratom use disorder, mostly mild or moderate (Hill 2024). Among those who met the criteria, 81.3% reported tolerance and 68.0% reported withdrawal.
• Older survey, PRELIMINARY. In a 2017 sample, 87.7% met no substance use disorder criteria and about 2% met criteria for a moderate or severe disorder (Garcia-Romeu 2020).
• Frequency matters, PRELIMINARY. In the studies reviewed here, dependence tracked how often people used kratom more than how much (Rogers 2024).
• Withdrawal, PRELIMINARY (self-report). It is reported. No source I read quantifies how long it lasts, and I found no controlled taper trials.
• Liver, case-level evidence, PRELIMINARY. A 2026 systematic review found 32 cases of liver injury linked to kratom, mostly cholestatic. Most improved after stopping, and 4 progressed to transplant (Calicdan 2026).
• Medicines, PRELIMINARY. In one small human study using a single dose of kratom tea, exposure to midazolam (a medicine broken down by the CYP3A enzyme) rose about 1.39 times, measured as AUC (Tanna 2023). If you take any prescription medicine, ask a pharmacist before you use kratom.
• Poison centers, ESTABLISHED surveillance data. US poison centers took 3,434 kratom exposure reports in 2025, up from 258 in 2015. 62% involved kratom alone. Of 233 deaths from 2015 to 2025, 79% involved more than one substance. Leaf and concentrated products can’t be told apart in these data (CDC MMWR).

Kratom is in the coffee family. Its alkaloids act on opioid and adrenergic receptors (ESTABLISHED in lab studies). Natural origin doesn’t mean low risk.

What nobody knows yet: how long withdrawal lasts, how risk compares between leaf and concentrated products in controlled studies, and whether seizure risk is real. The FDA lists it, and reviews by authors tied to kratom processors find insufficient evidence, so it is contested.

Kratom stopped working: tolerance or a bad batch?

Tolerance is one common explanation. In one non-probability survey (PRELIMINARY), 81.3% of current consumers who met criteria for kratom use disorder reported tolerance. A bad batch is the other. Check the lot code on your bag against a COA before you assume either one. If the lot matches a lab report and kratom still seems to work less than it did, that fits tolerance, and a pharmacist or clinician is a better next step than switching vendors.

What kind of kratom should I buy? Red, green and white: what the lab says

Vendors and users describe red as relaxing, green as balanced and white as energizing. In the one study that checked, the alkaloids didn’t differ by color. It was a 2023 analysis of six products from one vendor across three batches: no significant difference in mitragynine (p = 0.36), though not every alkaloid was measured (Huisman 2023). Users still describe effects that match the marketing. That doesn’t prove color is meaningless in every product. It means this study found no chemical difference, and no multi-vendor study has tested named strains. Leaf age, season, region and drying do change alkaloids.

So the best kind of kratom to buy is the kind you can verify: plain leaf from a vendor that publishes a batch COA. I don’t pick a strain for an effect.

Does the region matter?

Names like Bali, Borneo, Thai and Sumatra are trade labels. I found no study that ranks regions by lab results. What the lab data do show is that leaf age, season, geography and drying change alkaloid content, which is another reason to read the batch COA instead of the strain name.

Kratom powder vs capsules

Powder and capsules can both be plain leaf (readers shorten plain leaf powder to PLP), and both are easier to verify than other formats.

Kona sells every strain as capsules, and Kraken, Kratom Spot, Golden Monk and Left Coast all stock them. Alkaloid content varies more by batch than by brand, so the COA tells you more than the label.

Concentrated and semi-synthetic products are sold in exactly those formats, and some carry kratom labeling. In one 2025 study of 304 products, 92% of the 7-OH-only products were sold as “kratom” (Hill 2025, in Sources). Another study found frequent mismatches between label and contents in semi-synthetic tablets, films and shots (Gour 2026, in Sources).

Federal status: MP, MGM-15 and MGM-16 are Schedule I (temporary order, 26 Aug 2026). 7-OH has a DEA notice of intent pending. 7-OH is a minor leaf alkaloid. Concentrated tablets are not leaf.

What is packaged kratom, and what should you check?

Packaged kratom is kratom sold pre-bagged or pre-bottled in a physical store: a gas station, smoke shop, vape shop or kava bar. The leaf can be the same Indonesian leaf. What changes is how much you can verify before you pay.

Powder and capsules can be plain leaf. Shots, tablets and strips deserve more suspicion because concentrated and semi-synthetic products are sold in those formats. The FDA calls those concentrated products an emerging public health threat and says they turn up in gas stations and smoke shops (FDA, July 2026).

1. Find the batch number. Look for a lot code and a QR code or web address that leads to a lab report. No batch code, no purchase.
2. Read the ingredients. The only ingredient should be kratom leaf (Mitragyna speciosa). Put it back if you see 7-hydroxymitragynine, “7-OH”, or an “extract” with no alkaloid numbers.
3. Check the company that made it, not the store. Search that brand on the AKA list.
4. Check the format. Bagged powder and capsules are easier to verify than shots, tablets and strips.
5. Compare the price. Work out the price per gram against the vendors above. A big markup buys convenience and nothing else.
6. Check local rules. Some states and cities ban kratom or set a minimum age.

Who makes kratom, and who sells it in the US?

Most US kratom starts as leaf grown in Indonesia, mostly in West Kalimantan on Borneo. A 2022 Indonesian government statement says cultivation there spans 11,384 hectares and supports about 200,000 households (Executive Office of the President of Indonesia, Aug 2022).

1. Growers and collectors. Smallholders harvest the leaves.
2. Processors and exporters. They dry and grind the leaf and ship it to US buyers.
3. US importers and manufacturers. They test, blend, package, encapsulate or make extracts. This is the stage the AKA GMP program audits.
4. Brands and vendors. The names on the bag. Some run their own facility. Others use a contract manufacturer or relabel finished product.

The AKA list showed 54 entries on 6 October 2026. It has no last-updated date, so re-check it before you buy. Also check whose name is on the lab report and which company holds the GMP qualification. If the brand can’t answer, that tells you something.

What we know, what we don’t, and what would change my mind

Known. Leaf kratom is not federally controlled. MP, MGM-15 and MGM-16 are Schedule I. A quarter of current consumers in one survey met criteria for kratom use disorder. Commercial products vary widely in alkaloid content, and labels don’t show it. A COA covers one batch and one lab.

Unknown. How long withdrawal lasts. Whether some leaf powders could fail the DEA’s proposed ratio test. Whether seizure risk is real. Whether named strains differ in any multi-vendor study. Whether any vendor here sells every batch with a lot-matched report, because I haven’t matched lots myself.

What would change my mind. A vendor that links a lot-matched COA for every batch would move up my list. A vendor that drops off the AKA list, sells 7-OH under the kratom name or makes a health claim would come off it. I’d rewrite the legal table the day a DEA order issues.
