Where to buy kratom seeds: the short answer
You can still find kratom seeds on small online shops, eBay-style marketplaces and a few European seed sellers, but very few are fresh, viable or properly labelled. Researchers who grow kratom don’t use seeds at all: they propagate it from stem cuttings “due to low seed viability and poor germination rates” (Zhang et al., University of Florida, 2025).
That’s why we no longer recommend any seed vendor. We couldn’t verify that a single one ships seeds that reliably sprout. If you want to grow kratom at home, a live kratom plant gets you a growing tree on day one for about the price of a few failed seed packs.
Why kratom seeds are a bad buy
1. Most seeds sold online are dead on arrival
In the University of Florida study, 1,200 kratom seeds bought from an online vendor were tested under controlled conditions. The wild-sourced seeds failed to germinate in every treatment, even though they absorbed water normally (Lyndon, University of Florida). You have no way to tell a dead seed from a live one by looking at it: kratom seeds are only 3–5 mm long.
2. Even good seeds need lab conditions
The same study’s cultivated ‘Red Malay’ seeds did germinate, at around 70–75%. But the researchers hand-picked intact seeds under a microscope, sterilized them and controlled light and temperature for three weeks. Older methods that simply soak seeds in water are described as reaching only 10–20% (Lyndon, citing McCarthy 1961). Few home growers can match a university lab.
3. They carry fungus
Fungi, including Fusarium, Aspergillus and Penicillium, grew on most seeds in the study despite surface sterilization, which suggests kratom seeds carry fungi internally (Lyndon, University of Florida). Damping-off and mould are a common reason seedlings die.
4. The listings are hard to trust
Many kratom seed listings are labelled “novelty” or “not for planting”, give no harvest date and have no germination guarantee. Tiny, unmarked seeds are easy to mislabel, and you won’t know whether you got a white, green or red vein tree until it matures, if it ever does.

Why a live kratom plant is the better choice
A live plant skips the two stages where home growers lose most kratom: germination and the fragile seedling months. It arrives with an established root ball in soil, so your job starts at “keep it alive”, not “hope it sprouts”.

How to care for a live kratom plant
ETHA ships a care sheet with every plant. The essentials:
- Have a pot ready before it arrives: at least ½ gallon, ideally 1 gallon, plus enough potting soil to fill it.
- Pot it the same day. Make a hole the size of the soil ball, set the plant in without breaking up the roots, and cover it with only about ¼ inch of soil.
- Water lightly every day or as needed. Don’t let the soil dry out, but don’t soak it either.
- Expect some leaf drop. Kratom often sheds leaves after moving to a new environment. With care, they grow back.
- Keep it warm and humid. Kratom is a tropical tree. Keep it away from cold drafts and give it bright, indirect light while it settles.
- Pot up as it grows. If you plan to plant it outdoors in a warm climate, keep it in a 1-gallon pot for 2–4 months first to build roots.

- Realistic claims: be wary of anyone promising high germination rates without evidence.

Is it legal to buy kratom seeds or plants?
Kratom is not controlled federally in the US, but several states ban it, including Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Vermont and Wisconsin, and more states and cities added restrictions in 2025 and 2026. Can you grow kratom from seed?
Yes, but it is unreliable. Fresh, cultivated seeds germinated well only under lab conditions in a University of Florida study, while wild-sourced seeds bought online didn’t germinate at all. Most growers start from a rooted plant or cutting instead.
Where can I buy kratom seeds near me?

Why don’t red vein plants have red veins?
According to ETHA, red vein kratom plants don’t show red or brown veins until they mature. Young plants can look yellow-green.
