Every liposomal glutathione trial so far has measured the same thing: what changed in a blood sample.
None has checked whether a healthy person got healthier. So a label that promises brighter skin or a stronger immune system is borrowing its proof. It comes from a blood test, a trial of plain glutathione, or nothing.
The blood results are real, though. In the best-known trial, blood glutathione rose up to 40% within two weeks.1 The full trial-by-trial picture is in our guide to liposomal glutathione.

What does liposomal glutathione do?
It raises glutathione in your blood, at least in small trials. Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant your body makes, and it helps protect cells from oxidative damage.1 The liposome, a bubble of phospholipid, is meant to carry it past gut enzymes that break plain glutathione apart.
In 12 adults aged 51 to 72, 500 or 1,000 mg a day raised whole-blood glutathione up to 40%. Natural killer cell activity rose up to 400%. There was no placebo group.1
Liposomal glutathione benefits, graded
Grades. Shown: repeated in small human trials. Weak: one small trial or markers only. Very weak: no control group. Mixed: trials disagree. Not shown: tested and failed.
| Benefit | Best human evidence | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Higher blood glutathione | Up to 40% in 12 adults on liposomal, no placebo.1 Plain glutathione: 30 to 35% over 6 months against placebo.2 | Shown, small trials |
| Lighter, more even skin | Plain glutathione beat placebo at 2 of 6 skin sites in 60 adults.3 No published liposomal skin trial. | Weak |
| Immune support | Natural killer cell activity rose in the liposomal pilot and a 6-month plain trial.1,2 No trial counted infections. | Weak, markers only |
| Less oxidative stress | One marker fell 35% in the liposomal pilot.1 A 4-week placebo trial found no change.4 | Mixed |
| Liver health | Uncontrolled study in 29 people with fatty liver.5 Null in cirrhosis.6 | Very weak |
| Blood sugar | Insulin sensitivity rose in 20 men over 3 weeks.7 | Weak |
| Energy and exercise | Less fatigue after a 60-minute ride in 8 men.8 | Weak |
| Weight loss, hair, hangover | No human trial found. | No trial |
| Brain and Parkinson’s | IV and nasal glutathione did no better than placebo.9,10 | Not shown |
Rows not marked liposomal used plain, sublingual, IV or nasal glutathione.
Liposomal glutathione benefits for skin
Skin is the claim with the most trials, and all of them used plain glutathione. In 60 adults, 500 mg a day for 4 weeks lightened skin more than placebo at 2 of the 6 sites measured.3 In 60 women, 250 mg a day for 12 weeks nudged melanin and dark spots below placebo, without a clear margin. Wrinkles improved at some sites.11
A 2019 review called the evidence for skin lightening inconclusive.12 One trial in 124 Asian women found glutathione worked better paired with L-cystine than alone.13 Most of these skin trials were in women, the closest evidence for “benefits for women.” No published trial has tested liposomal glutathione on skin.
Immune system
Natural killer cells, which attack infected cells, got more active in the liposomal pilot and the 6-month plain trial.1,2
The only placebo-controlled trials of liposomal glutathione were in patients. In 30 adults with HIV given about 1,260 mg a day or empty liposomes for 3 months, the glutathione group’s immune signals, called cytokines, shifted in a healthier direction and free radicals fell from baseline.14 A smaller HIV trial of 15 people found similar cytokine changes.15 In 18 adults with type 2 diabetes, immune cells handled tuberculosis bacteria better in lab tests.16
All three used ReadiSorb, supplied and partly funded by its maker. None of these five trials counted infections. A 2000 review found no sign that glutathione or cysteine improves immune function in healthy people. Its evidence of a benefit came from NAC in people with HIV.17
Liver
29 people with fatty liver finished an uncontrolled study of plain glutathione, 300 mg a day for 4 months. Their liver enzyme ALT fell by a median of 12.9%, and their HbA1c, a blood sugar marker, rose.5
In a placebo-controlled trial of 61 people with cirrhosis, 500 mg a day for 12 weeks did nothing for oxidative stress.6
Weight loss and blood sugar
No trial has tested glutathione for weight loss. In 20 men with obesity, 1,000 mg a day of plain glutathione for 3 weeks raised whole-body insulin sensitivity compared with placebo, which is a step removed from weight loss.7
Energy, exercise and fatigue
8 healthy men took 1 g a day of plain glutathione or placebo for 2 weeks, then cycled for 60 minutes. On glutathione, blood lactate was lower, 2.9 vs 3.4 mM, and they reported less fatigue.8 It was double-blind, but 8 people is a tiny sample.
Hair, hangovers and detox
No human trial has tested glutathione for hair growth, for hangovers, or for “detox” as an outcome. Glutathione helps your cells detoxify drugs, which is where the detox story comes from.1 No study shows that swallowing it speeds up clearing anything.
Other claimed benefits, graded
Most of this evidence is for plain, injected or inhaled forms.
Grades. Very weak: one small or uncontrolled study, a combination product, or another route. Not shown: tested and failed.
| Claim | Best human evidence | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Blood pressure | With citrulline, it blunted the blood pressure spike under stress in a 3-arm trial of 44 women.18 Sublingual glutathione alone did not improve blood vessel function in 16 men, though LDL fell.19 | Very weak |
| Type 2 diabetes | In 250 diabetics on medication, 125 added 500 mg a day for 6 months, no placebo. Glutathione rose. HbA1c fell only in people over 55.20 | Very weak |
| Cancer | No trial of glutathione against cancer. Oncology guidance says not to offer it to prevent nerve damage from paclitaxel and carboplatin.21 A review warns antioxidants may weaken radiotherapy.22 | No trial, caution |
| Acne | 40 people, 500 mg a day for 4 weeks against placebo. No significant change.23 | Not shown |
| Cystic fibrosis | One trial in 44 children found better growth.24 A larger multicenter trial found none.25 Inhaled glutathione failed in 153 people.26 | Not shown |
| Autism | In 13 children, liposomal glutathione raised plasma glutathione over 8 weeks, with no placebo. Symptoms were not measured.27 | Very weak |
| Muscle and strength | With citrulline, lean mass rose at 4 weeks but not at 8 in a 3-arm trial of 75 trained men.28 | Very weak |
| Male fertility | Injected glutathione improved sperm movement in 20 men, in 1993.29 Nothing oral. | Very weak |
| COVID-19 | Two case reports, no control group.30 The FDA and FTC have sent warning letters to sellers over COVID claims.31 | Very weak |
| Recovery after surgery | No human trial found. | No trial |
If you are in cancer treatment, talk to your oncologist before taking any glutathione.
Who is most likely to feel a benefit?
People who start low. In the liposomal pilot, the people with the lowest glutathione at baseline gained the most.1 The same pattern shows up with NAC, which raised glutathione only in people who started low.32 And in 114 healthy older adults, glycine plus NAC moved glutathione only in a low-glutathione subgroup.33
So if your levels are normal, your body may hold them there.
How long do the benefits take?
Blood glutathione rose within one to two weeks in the liposomal pilot, and the gains were smaller by week four.1 In the 6-month plain trial, levels kept rising for months and fell back to baseline within a month of stopping.2
FAQ
What are the uses of liposomal glutathione?
Skin tone, immune support, liver health, energy and “detox.” Only the rise in blood glutathione has repeated support, and most of the rest comes from plain glutathione.
Is liposomal glutathione worth it?
If you want a higher blood glutathione number, small trials say it can move it. If you want to feel or look different, no liposomal trial has shown that. NAC is a cheaper way to give your body the raw material, as our liposomal glutathione vs NAC comparison shows. If you buy, our guide on how to choose a liposomal glutathione scores ten brands on lab reports and price.
The short version
Liposomal glutathione raises blood glutathione in small trials, and it shifted immune markers in small patient trials. Skin rests on three small trials of plain glutathione, and energy and blood sugar on one each. Weight loss, hair and hangovers have none.
Take it for the evidence that exists, especially if your levels are low, and skip the bottle that promises more.
