Liposomal Glutathione: Does It Work? What the Research Shows and How to Choose

In 2012, Stanford finished the largest placebo-controlled trial of liposomal glutathione ever registered. Its results have never been published.1

The trial enrolled 78 adults for eight weeks on government money. Then nothing: no paper and no posted data since.

Liposomal brands lean on a different study. That one had 12 people, no placebo group, and the company selling the product paid for it.2

So does liposomal glutathione work? It can raise glutathione in your blood, and small trials show that much. What no trial has shown is that it makes a healthy person healthier, or that the liposome beats plain glutathione at the same dose.

Prices are all over the place too. Per gram of glutathione, one bottle costs 16 times more than another.

What is liposomal glutathione?

Glutathione is a three-amino-acid peptide your cells build from glutamate, cysteine and glycine.3 Not glutamine, a different amino acid with a similar name.

It is the most abundant antioxidant your body makes, and it helps protect cells from oxidative damage.2 The working form is called reduced glutathione. Labels also call it L-glutathione. In blood, most of it sits inside red cells. Because you make your own, a supplement only helps if swallowed glutathione survives digestion.

Much of it doesn’t. Enzymes in the intestine and liver cut glutathione apart. When 7 people took 3 grams at once, their plasma levels did not rise.4

“Liposomal” means the glutathione sits inside tiny bubbles of phospholipid, the same fat family that forms cell walls. The idea is that the bubble carries it past the gut. Some liposomes do survive the stomach. But bile and digestive enzymes in the small intestine can break them open, according to a 2025 UK government toxicology review.5 The usual raw material, lecithin, is only about 20 to 26% phosphatidylcholine, the part that forms the bubble.6

Does liposomal glutathione raise your glutathione levels?

Yes, in small trials, mostly measured in blood, and mostly paid for by the companies that make the product.

How to read it. No placebo: nothing to compare against. Placebo, tiny: a comparison group, but under 20 people. Never published: finished, results unseen.

The study everyone cites

Sinha 2018 is the paper brands reach for first. 2

People measured their own doses from a tube with a spoon. Weighed afterward, the tubes showed they took 109% of the planned dose. Nobody knows exactly how much anyone got. The paper’s own numbers don’t agree with each other: immune-cell glutathione is “100%” in the abstract and “200%” in the discussion. And the biggest gains came in the people whose glutathione started lowest. If yours is already normal, expect less.

The authors called it a pilot and asked for placebo-controlled trials. Two placebo-controlled ReadiSorb trials did finish, at Stanford in 2012 and Maryland in 2021. Neither was published.1,10

Plain glutathione has the stronger trial

The best single trial of oral glutathione used no liposome at all. In 2015, 54 adults took plain glutathione or placebo for six months. At 1,000 mg a day, glutathione in red cells, plasma and lymphocytes rose 30 to 35%. A month after stopping, it was back to baseline.11

But a 4-week trial of 1,000 mg a day in 40 adults found nothing.12 A 2024 meta-analysis pooled three plain-glutathione trials and found no clear rise.13 The record for oral glutathione is mixed, liposomal or not, as our oral peptides ranking also found.

What no one has measured

No study has measured glutathione in liver, brain or muscle after oral liposomal glutathione. And a higher number in a blood tube is not the same as better skin or immunity.

Liposomal glutathione benefits: what the evidence supports

No trial has shown that liposomal glutathione improves a health outcome in healthy people. Most evidence below comes from plain glutathione, and our guide to liposomal glutathione benefits grades every claim.

Grades. Weak: small trials or markers only. Very weak: no control group. Mixed: trials disagree. Not shown: tested and failed.

Claimed benefits of glutathione and the best human evidence for each
ClaimBest human evidenceGrade
Lighter skin60 adults, plain glutathione 500 mg a day for 4 weeks. It beat placebo at 2 of 6 skin sites.14 A 2019 review called the evidence inconclusive.15 No published liposomal skin trial exists.Weak
Immune supportNatural killer cell activity rose in Sinha and in the 6-month plain trial.2,11 No trial counted infections.Weak
Oxidative stressOne oxidation marker fell 35% in Sinha.2 The 4-week placebo trial found no change.12Mixed
Fatty liver29 people finished an uncontrolled study of plain glutathione 300 mg a day. A liver enzyme fell. Their HbA1c rose.16Very weak
Insulin sensitivity20 men with obesity, plain glutathione 1,000 mg a day for 3 weeks. Insulin sensitivity rose against placebo.17Weak
Parkinson’sIV and nasal glutathione trials. Neither beat placebo.18,19Not shown
Weight loss, hair, hangoverNo human trial found. No trial

Skin is the strongest claim, and that evidence is for plain glutathione. No trial supports cancer claims, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology says clinicians should not offer glutathione to prevent nerve damage during paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy.20

Liposomal vs reduced, S-acetyl, NAC and IV glutathione

Forms of glutathione compared by human evidence and their main limits
FormWhat it has shown in peopleThe catch
Plain reducedThe 6-month placebo trial: up 30 to 35% at 1,000 mg a day.11A 4-week trial found nothing.12
LiposomalSmall trials with rises in blood. One dose of 300 mg matched 500 mg plain.9The biggest trial was never published.
S-acetylOne single-dose study: plasma glutathione rose more than with plain, red-cell glutathione rose less.21In 2026 the EU food safety agency judged 300 mg a day acceptable for adults.22
SublingualBeat a swallowed capsule on one oxidation measure in 20 adults.23Two authors worked for the maker.
NACA building block, not glutathione. Raised it only in people who started low.24Placebo trials often found no rise.
IVHalf-life about 14 minutes.25In 2026 the FDA reported at least 30 people with adverse events after IV glutathione made from supplement-grade powder.26
InhaledIn 8 people with mild asthma, lung function fell 19%.27Do not nebulize it if you have asthma.

Liposomal glutathione side effects and who should skip it

Oral glutathione trials report no serious side effects linked to the supplement. Minor ones include loose stools and gas, flushing, itching and tiredness.13,28 So yes, it can make you poop more.

Talk to a doctor first, or skip it, in these cases:

  • If you have asthma, never inhale or nebulize glutathione.27
  • In cancer treatment, get your oncologist’s OK first. A 2025 review found antioxidants taken during radiotherapy may weaken tumor control.29,20
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding have no human safety data. The EU food safety agency excluded both groups from its 2026 opinion on S-acetyl glutathione.22
  • Read the label if you avoid soy or alcohol. ReadiSorb, LivOn, Tri-Fortify and Aurora use soy, and one packet of LivOn’s Lypo-Spheric holds 0.648 g of ethanol, though its FAQ lists the amount in milligrams.30
  • Be wary of glutathione drips. Supplement-grade powder made into IV doses is behind the FDA’s 2026 alert of at least 30 adverse events.26

How people took it in the trials

Published adult trials used 500 to 1,260 mg a day of liposomal glutathione, and 250 to 1,000 mg a day of plain glutathione.2,7,11 The ReadiSorb trials split it into a morning and an evening dose.7

No study has tested an empty stomach against food, or morning against night. In one 2026 study of a micellar form, stomach upset eased when people took it with food.9 None of this is dosing advice.

How to choose a liposomal glutathione

A test commissioned by a rival brand found only 6 of 12 glutathione products sold on Amazon contained their claimed amount, and two contained none.31,32 An earlier test found a capsule labeled “2000 mcg.” That is 2 mg.33

  1. Find the milligrams of reduced glutathione per serving, and check it says mg, not mcg.
  2. Look for the phospholipid with a milligram amount, like “phosphatidylcholine 75 mg.” The word “lecithin” alone tells you little.
  3. Ask for a lab report matched to your lot number, with potency and heavy metals. No brand we checked publishes measured liposome size or how much glutathione sits inside the liposomes, and NSF or USP seals don’t test that either.
  4. Work out the price per gram: price ÷ (mg per serving × servings ÷ 1,000). A $45 bottle with 50 servings of 100 mg holds 5 g, so you pay $9 a gram.
  5. Refrigerate liquids after opening and finish them in the window on the label, usually 30 to 75 days.
  6. Expect a sulfur smell. One maker’s lab spec lists the odor as “characteristic of sulfur.”34 One patent blames oxidized glutathione for a pungent sulfur smell, and seals its liquid in an airless pump to keep oxygen out.35
  7. Walk away from “FDA approved” on a supplement, and from “clinically proven” when the study didn’t test that exact product.

We scored ten brands on these checks in our ranking of the best liposomal glutathione. More seller red flags are in our peptide scams guide.

Liposomal glutathione FAQ

Is liposomal glutathione better than regular glutathione?

Not proven. The only head-to-head human test found 300 mg liposomal and 500 mg plain raised blood glutathione about equally, after one dose.9 The longest positive trial used plain glutathione, as our glutathione forms comparison shows.11

Liposomal glutathione vs NAC: which raises glutathione more?

No published trial has compared them. Stanford tested both against placebo and never published the results.1 NAC raised glutathione in people who started low, and did not change it in people with moderate or high levels.24 Our liposomal glutathione vs NAC comparison covers cost, brain data and the COPD trials.

How long does liposomal glutathione take to work?

Blood levels rose within one to two weeks in the Sinha pilot.2 In the 6-month plain trial, levels kept climbing for months and fell back within a month of stopping.11

Why does liposomal glutathione smell like eggs?

Glutathione contains sulfur. LivOn calls it “a bit of a cooked egg smell.”30 A smell that gets stronger over time can mean oxidation.35

Can liposomal glutathione lighten skin?

No published liposomal skin trial exists. Plain glutathione beat placebo at 2 of 6 skin sites in one 4-week trial, and a review called the evidence inconclusive.14,15

So is liposomal glutathione worth it?

If you want a higher number on a blood test, glutathione can probably move it, liposomal or plain, and the number falls when you stop. If you want to look or feel different, no trial has shown that.

So pick the bottle that shows its milligrams and its lab report, at a price per gram you can live with. The word “liposomal” on the front proves nothing. Glutathione is a peptide, and our plain-English guide to peptides covers the rest of the family.

And if Stanford ever publishes that 2012 trial, this page will change.
